Modern
This type of design was a response to the fancy, busy, and ornate architecture of the late 19th century. The modernist architects at the time chose to ignore the rules and rebel against what was traditional. This included Edwardian, Victorian, and eclecticism styles. In the 1920s, there was also the Art Deco period.
The modern architects' goal
The modernists made the decision to create homes with a clear lack of flair and ornamentation. This was in contrast to what you saw in popular home designs back then. Instead their homes had a robust horizontal composition. Additionally, there were huge open floor plans, and large expanses of glass walls or windows. There was the intentional asymmetry as well. What they aimed to do here was fabricate a simplified house that stressed function.
Contemporary architecture
In contrast, this style has roots in the present. As a result, these forms of buildings are usually more forward looking and innovative. Yet, the design here is more complex than with modern homes. They tend to be more artistic and free-form. It follows the examples of every kind of design and does not respond to the times. Contemporary architecture is fluid and changes all the time. It does so to match the popular trends.
