We all want something different from our homes. It could be peaceful spaces for relaxing or a colourful, stimulating environment. One thing we can all agree on though is that light, airy spaces are the best. Natural light is a great resource and can make properties far more comfortable. At Coffey Architects we have the skills to design homes that have excellent lighting.

Top tips

There are many different things you can do to get more natural light. Some of them require a little investment whereas others are suitable for any kind of budget.

New windows and doors

This is potentially the most costly option but it can be the most effective. New larger windows can let in a lot more light. You could also opt for bi-fold doors and turn a full wall into one large opening. This will also help to connect your home with the garden.

Flooring

Improving your floors is another option that can require some investment. However, it can be a great help in making spaces lighter. There are some great options such as timbers and tiles with a reflective finish. These surfaces reflect light and make spaces brighter. As a result they can be a far better option than dull dark carpets. If you prefer carpeting though, lighter colours are the best choice.

Reflective surfaces

Glossy materials reflect far more light than matte ones. As a result they are a better option if you want to make a space brighter. Think furniture, walls, doors, and surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom.

Maintenance

Simply cleaning your windows regularly can have a good impact on your home. Clean glass will let in as much light as possible and it looks much better too. Staying on top of your gardening work can help too. What you need to do is ensure that hedges and trees are trimmed often so they don't block light.
