Overcoming the challenges of urban architecture
When it comes to creating residential architecture in London, there are many challenges to be overcome. Our clients have countless different individual requirements, but they all need enough comfort, space, privacy and functionality for their properties to really work. When space is limited and properties are situated in busy urban locations, it can be difficult to cover all of these needs. However, as skilled, experienced and versatile architects, we make intelligent use of our available space and resources to deliver this. One example of effective problem solving can be seen in our Canopy Housing development. This project involved the creation of two three-bedroom houses in Islington, close to a railway line, as well as the renovation and improvement of an adjoining property. Natural light is a crucial consideration in residential properties, so we designed the buildings with the path of the sun foremost in our minds. We placed the living spaces on the first floors of the properties in order to maximise the amount of light that could enter the property. We also included sloped roofing to allow more light into the gardens. In such a busy area of the capital, it was important to consider privacy. We included obscured glass windows to prevent outsiders from seeing into the property and to ensure people inside were not overlooking adjacent homes, while also allowing plenty of light to enter. The new properties are highly distinctive, but also complement their surroundings and work with the surrounding properties, bringing the best of both worlds to the occupants and other residents in the area. This is just one of the many successful residential projects we have completed in recent times, and showcases our ability to revitalise existing buildings while also creating brand new developments which fit perfectly into their surroundings.
