Innovative elements of residential architects in London
This year's RIBA awards celebrated some of the most incredible residential architecture London has to offer, including our own Hidden House. The projects were immensely innovative and found unique solutions to challenges such as restricted access or unusually shaped spaces. We would like to discuss some of the most astonishing features of the properties here. One of the biggest changes to homes in recent years is the rise in the number of people who have their own main workspace in the property. This has given rise to plenty of attractive design ideas as people look to create the ideal working environment. A birdcage shaped workspace is one of the most amazing features of 6 Wood Lane. It is bright and airy, benefitting from the location in the property and the beautiful windows. The project is even more astonishing because it is a self-build.The Cooperage in Clerkenwell stands out because it is a renovation of a previous refurbishment. In the 80s and 90s a number of old industrial buildings were converted into new homes, particularly loft style ones. Many of these are now due to be revisited. This project stands out because of the triple-height space and the grandness of the design. The industrial history of the property is preserved but there is also focus on living thanks to warm lighting and vegetation. The two storey extension Sun Rain Room really elevates the Georgian townhouse in Islington. Again the design is driven by creating a home workspace but this time there is a leisure space above in the form of an inverted pleasure-dome. The green roof really tops everything off nicely. With a need to create more housing in London, some offices and retail spaces are being converted into homes. Vantage Point is an award winning conversion of an 18 storey block. The building was formerly regarded as a failed design but the development has transformed it. The new homes are attractive and offer wonderful views. The foot of the tower now offers a better pedestrian experience and there is new cladding to brighten the building up.We are proud that our project sits amongst these great works and also contributes innovative ideas. This is needed to keep pushing design forward and to allow the development of tricky sites and existing buildings that could be improved. The focus will create some of the best residential architecture London has.
