Revealing Don't Move, Improve! 2018

The thirty-strong shortlist for Don't Move, Improve! 2018 was revealed recently and includes some of the most impressive projects in the capital. Each of the designs has enhanced the residential architecture London is home to and deserves their chance to earn the title of London's best home extension or renovation. There are plenty of unique renovations and extensions on the list of nominees. Most notable are the number of properties that have been carefully extended to make bright, airy, spacious interiors. The use of large panes of glass and the popularity of floor to ceiling sliding doors that connect the interior with the garden are fantastic.Although many of the properties are extensions to homes some are a little different. For example a project to transform a disused water tank into a home is on the shortlist. There is also a regeneration of a Victorian workshop. The overall winners will be announced on 25th January 2018. At the same time an exhibition featuring all of the original 120 submissions will be revealed. This will give anybody interested the chance to have a look at the projects and get inspiration from them.Last year the overall winner was a garden room that featured a wonderful Japanese style bath sunken into the floor. The second placed project was an extension that featured amazing use of timber shingles. The third place was awarded to another extension, this time used as a workshop for creating rugs.As you can see, the previous winners were immensely diverse. The same could happen this year with such a fantastic selection of projects for the judges to choose from. Each project shows that improving a current property can regularly prove to be a better option than moving to a new home. An extension or renovation can completely transform a home, especially if the design is really good and matches the brief. At Coffey Architects we have experience with both extensions and renovations. We will be looking out for the winners and can take inspiration from all of the innovative ideas on display. Projects like this keep improving the residential architecture London is home to so we are always pleased to look at them.
