Open plan living gives a sense of light and space

Open plan layouts have become increasingly popular in the design of modern homes. With a decreasing amount of living space available to many of us, open plan homes give us that sought-after sense of space, particularly in smaller properties. With fewer dividing walls, there is more room for natural light to reach every corner. Many people also find open plan homes to be more social, as they can cook, work, read, watch television or carry out any other activity without having to retreat to another room away from family and friends. One of our most distinctive examples of open plan design is the Island Home penthouse, located in London. When we embarked on this project, our goal was to produce a feeling of light and spaciousness, with a sense that the residents can freely flow from room to room. The main feature of the penthouse is a combined living room and kitchen, visually separated by a large stainless steel kitchen island yet still very much connected. We achieved a balance between openness and privacy by installing a glass screen between the bedroom and the combined kitchen and living area, which can be turned translucent with the flick of a switch. We realised that it was also important to maximise the natural light which the penthouse had access to, so we added a large new window and included numerous stainless steel elements and white lacquered panels to reflect light. These industrial elements are balanced by rustic floorboards made from quality Douglas fir. The finished effect is a welcoming, contemporary living space which is filled with natural light and allows for easy, unrestricted movement, perfect for relaxing, entertaining and working. If you love the idea of open plan living and are in need of a skilled team who specialise in creating bespoke residential architecture for London clients, look no further.
