Old meets new during regeneration projects

Architects working in London face many unique challenges. There is a requirement to create properties which respect traditions and work well within their existing surroundings, but that also contribute towards the rapidly evolving modern landscape of the city. These concerns become even more pressing when architects are involved in a renovation or regeneration project. In recent times we have faced this challenge in a large number of projects, including one in which we've been tasked with the delivery of new housing solutions in South London. The project has recently received planning permission and is set to proceed throughout the months ahead. At this stage, we are focusing on some of the most important concepts of the project, which will involve blending the old with the new in a way that works both aesthetically and functionally.The requirement is to deliver 70 new living units of varying sizes to a site in Bermondsey. The location has been part of an ongoing regeneration project, and the area we are working on will be the final part. Our plans had to deliver the required living space within certain size parameters, enable access to the area via newly restored road access, and to retain the artists' studio facilities located there. Even in this broad overview the complexities of this project are quite apparent, and we also need to consider how we will help the building to flourish with its own identity.As the project progresses, we will be sharing updates on our main website. We have been proud to participate in this project and have relished the challenge of delivering architectural designs which meet all of these diverse requirements.Whether the requirement is for commercial or residential architecture, London poses many challenges to us as architects. Whether we are working on brand new builds or regeneration projects in the city, our goal is always to enhance and add to the existing landscape while simultaneously creating structures which help to move architecture into the future.
