Investing in BIM
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is being adopted by more and more practices in the architectural industry all around the world. We are amongst this number at Coffey Architects having recently made the move to invest in the technology and training for our team. Will Chan, one of our project architects, was even recently interviewed for an article on the BIM+ website. There are several reasons why BIM is a great investment. Firstly it can streamline the design process of projects, even the most complex ones. With larger works it also helps with coordination, providing big benefits and cost savings as a result.Knowledge of BIM is spreading, with more and more clients in the private sector requesting it more often and the UK government mandating Level 2 be used on all public projects. In order to take on all of these projects the team at Coffey Architects had to improve their skills. This also allows us to offer the BIM framework to existing clients if they want to take advantage of it.In order to up-skill our team we asked a dedicated BIM consultant who had experience of working with architectural firms to help us. They provided training sessions and will offer ongoing support. We have come a long way with BIM. The very first project we used it on was a piece of residential architect in London, specifically a residential-led development in Bermondsey. This set the groundwork and we started making the investments in software and training to improve the skills of our team. We began work on a second project involving BIM earlier this year. This time it was a residential tower in Southwark.Clients looking for help with residential architecture in London who want to work with an architect that uses BIM can come to us with confidence. We will use the model to bring a myriad of benefits to the project and maximise value for the client. Whatever the scale of the work we are confident we can take it on.
