Exploring the Barking Riverside and its residential architecture
Barking Riverside is one of the largest regeneration projects in the whole of London. The site stretches two kilometres along the Thames and will ultimately become the location of a brand new neighbourhood. Outline permission was given in 2007 for a plan to build 10,800 homes in four stages. On top of this new schools, healthcare facilities, commercial spaces, public squares, and community spaces will be created. One of the standout aspects of the plan is the commitment to building homes to suit the needs of residents. This means there will be a higher proportion of larger family properties than is generally the case on projects like this. There will be a good number of riverside apartments in the mix too.All of the homes will be designed based on strong environmental principles. The idea is to make them as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible, resulting in a neighbourhood that will have a very bright future. The team at Coffey Architects was incredibly excited to visit the site recently and be involved in the newest phase of Barking Riverside. The project strikes a chord with us because it showcases a lot of ambition with the home designs. This is vital for success and can help to inspire others when looking at residential architecture in London.Several conference sessions have been held to discuss the plans for the Barking Riverside development. During them various themes were covered including housing delivery and making new places. One theme that was discussed was of particular importance to us. It covered the value of seeking artistic and architectural input early in the planning process and the benefits it can have.As a leading name for residential architecture in London we are pleased to see more thought being put into designs, particularly for such a large project as Barking Riverside. Other Councils and developers should take inspiration from it, ensuring they are building for the future.
