From dark and dingy to bright and airy
A problem with some old mews housing is that there are only windows at the front of the property. As a result many spaces are dark, dingy and reliant on artificial lights. We encountered this kind of issue on our Modern Mews project. The owners gave us the challenge to remodel the home and improve it. We came up with some really creative solutions. GlazingCutting new openings in an existing building is difficult in many cases because it changes the character of the property. It is even more challenging with period homes. Sadly it was not an option with this mews project so we had to come up with an alternative. Our idea was to create a glazed roof in the centre of the property above the repositioned staircase. The new stairs have open treads and glazed landings. As a result the light from the roof can filter all the way to the ground floor. As a result the entire space is much lighter.Rice paperIn Japan it is popular to use wooden frames with translucent rice paper covers for walls and doors. There are many advantages with this kind of architecture, including the fact that it allows light to filter through a property rather than blocking it. The materials are also more sustainable and lighter. We made use of this idea on the mews project. Throughout the property there are sliding doors made of rice paper. They look stunning and also help to keep the space light and airy. This was a very exciting job and we are really happy with the results. You can find out more about it on our website.
