Creating a functional and beautiful modern mews house
Mews houses are a quintessentially British type of traditional property. Originally built in the Victorian era as stables with servants' quarters upstairs, many of the capital's historic mews houses have now been converted into comfortable, contemporary homes. As well as creating new properties, our architectural team are often required to update old ones, and one of our most exciting recent projects involved the transformation of an existing mews house. We started off with the existing empty shell of the property, and we created the interior with the addition of bespoke joinery which made up the floors and interior walls. Each part of the internal structure was made to fit the exterior envelope perfectly, bringing contemporary form and function to a traditional structure. Sliding doors allow the home to be adapted, allowing the residents to open up the entire space or close them off when privacy is needed. The home has also been fitted with contemporary fixtures and appliances. As they were never intended to be luxurious properties when they were first built, original mews houses often suffer from a lack of light and space; we resolved these issues by making thoughtful use of layout and materials. An open atrium runs all the way up through the centre of the property, and each level is connected by a continuous staircase. We also included transparent panels on the various levels. This means that light is able to spill down, illuminating every level and creating a feeling of space and openness. This is one of many projects we have worked on which involved the renovation of residential architecture in London, bringing old properties up to date and making them into practical, modern homes. From creating new properties to renovating and extending existing ones, we are ready to take on a wide range of projects.
