Arch Study

NOTTING HILL

A Refurbished Home Office and Guest Bedroom occupy a corner of one of the oldest homes in West London. A stripped back interior reveals the historic arch structure within which a timber mezzanine and kitchen are carefully inserted to create more space and an essay in curves and material.

Inside a historic structure in London's Notting Hill conservation area, a guest house and home office retrofit has been successfully completed. This unique dual-purpose space, inspired by pandemic-driven remote work, comprises a ground floor with a kitchen-living area for hosting clients, a guest bedroom, and bathrooms, along with a dedicated workspace with a bespoke desk on the mezzanine. In harmony with the existing edifice and its exposed vaulted ceiling, a precise, functional split-level design was created, forming a dialogue with the overhead vaults.

CRAFT / FLUTING AND CURVES

An impressive bespoke oak desk, crafted in situ over three months, highlights the mezzanine office. The ground floor reflects this functionality, concealing kitchen appliances behind custom joinery for a clutter-free look. The ground floor's simple materials set the stage for detailed features to soften the space, including the kitchen's fluted stone backsplash, curved surfaces, and the bedroom's fluted oak panelling. Brick arches and curvilinear forms further emphasise the harmonious interplay of design elements.
